Hawks will need help to capture the 2011 WIAC Title
UW-Stevens Point swept its four-game series at UW-Platteville over the weekend. Combined with UW-Whitewater splitting its weekend series in Oshkosh, the Pointers enter the final weekend in the WIAC in first place with a 16 & 4 record. UW-Whitewater will enters with a 15 & 5 conference mark and one game back of Stevens Point.
UW-Whitewater head coach John Vodenlich acknowledges that one of the primary goals is to capture the regular season WIAC title. He also knows the conference title isn’t the only postseason goal for his club.
“As proud as we are of winning 10 out of the last 12 WIAC championships, the carrot has really become the (NCAA Division III Midwest) regional,” Vodenlich tells Voiceseyeonbaseballblogspot.com. “I’d like to think if we can continue to play decent baseball we’re going to get to the regional. It will be at that time that as a team we will have to play enthusiastic and inspired baseball.”
A note… prior to this coming weekend’s action the Warhawks will play host to the College of St. Scholastica (27-4) in a battle to Top-10 nationally ranked teams Tuesday afternoon in Whitewater. The doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
UWSP will host UW-Stout for four games beginning on Saturday. The Warhawks will host UW-La Crosse for a pair of doubleheaders at James B. Miller Stadium.
If Point and Whitewater end the regular season tied for first place UW-Stevens Point will hold the tie breaker due to its four-game sweep over Oshkosh earlier this season. UWW and UWSP split there four-game series in Stevens Point back in April.
