UWW and UWL both have plenty to play for this weekend at Miller Stadium

One look at the WIAC baseball standings entering the final weekend of the conference season shows its importance for both the Warhawks and UW-La Crosse.

UW-Stevens Point is in first place with a 16 & 4 conference mark. The Warhawks are in second a game back at 15 & 5. UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh are currently tied for 3rd place with 11 & 9 records.

Only three teams advance to next weekend’s WIAC postseason tournament.

If UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater wind up tied for 1st place following Saturday’s game the tie-breaker would go to the Pointers on the basis of having a better record vs UW-Oshkosh.

The Warhawks are entering the weekend series vs. La Crosse with one primary focus – to win four games.

“We can’t sit here and worry about what everyone else is doing,” UWW head coach John Vodenlich said following his team’s split with St. Scholastica earlier this week. “Regardless of what happens this week we have to play good enough baseball to get into the conference tournament and then we need to get some momentum heading into the regional.”

This month’s NCAA Division III Midwest Regional will be held on Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium May 18th to the 22nd.

If La Crosse finishes all alone in third place both UWW and UWSP would have swept its four games this spring vs. the Eagles. And the Oshkosh tiebreaker again would be in favor of Stevens Point.

Speaking of UW-Oshkosh, the Titans and UWL Eagles enter the weekend tied for 3rd place in the WIAC with identical 11 & 9 conference records.

At the end of the weekend, if both Point and La Crosse remain tied in the final conference standings the determination of the final berth in the WIAC postseason tournament would be determined via the WIAC tiebreaker process.

UWL and UWO split its four-game series last month in Oshkosh.

Friday’s twinbill will get underway at 1 p.m. at Miller Stadium.

Saturday’s doubleheader gets underway at 12-noon and will include formal dedication ceremonies for Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The on-field ceremony will take place between games of Saturday’s doubleheader.
