Donovan dominant in starter's role in game-two

Jeff Donovan was dominating in the starting pitcher's role in game-two of UW-Whitewater's home opening doubleheader vs. Ripon College at James B. Miller Stadium.

Donovan pitched 4 1/3 innings of no hit ball before giving up two hits and a run in the top if the fifth inning. The senior from Wauwatosa East High School gave way to the bullpen following the fifth inning with freshman Colin Grove] taking over.

Donovan was cruising on the mound setting the Red Hawks down in order in each of the first four innings. Nine of the twelve Ripon batters grounded out.

The key to Donovan’s game-two outing was that he had command of all his pitches.

“That is the big thing,” Donovan said in the dugout after the game. “Last year I worried about my fast ball – that it was too hittable. Now I’m just trusting it and getting ahead in the count with it. The key right now is to be able to throw my curve ball for strikes. Once I am able to throw either of those pitches at anytime in the count then I will know that I am where I want to be.”

Donovan’s bid for a no-hitter and shutout ended with one out in the fifth inning by giving up back to back hits eventually allowing the Red Hawks to plate its first run of the game.

Donovan improved to 3-0 with his five innings of work. The Warhawk bullpen was solid again in game-two by receiving scoreless innings in relief from Colin Grove and Matthew Roberts with UWW cathcer Rob Coe piching the final inning in his first career outing on the mound.
