Warhawks got "good work in" during it's 2011 southern swing

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will open the “north portion” of its schedule Thursday afternoon by hosting Ripon College for a non-conference doubleheader on Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

The Warhawks will take on 5 & 2 mark into Thursday’s home opener.

UWW played seven varsity games (two in St. Louis and five in Florida). “We had a productive trip,” UWW head coach John Vodenlich tells Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com. We were able to get work both in varsity and varsity reserve games last week in Florida. It was a great way to assess where we are as a team heading north.”

The Hawks defeated Washington University (11-1 and 16-10 in St. Louis. The Florida trip included victories over: St. Olaf, Minnesota (7-2), St. Thomas (7-6) & Mount Vernon Nazarene, Ohio (8-6). Whitewater’s two spring training losses were by a total of just three runs.

The Hawks lost 3-2 to St. Olaf in the first game of a doubleheader. Whitewater concluded its spring break Florida trip by dropping a 6-4 decision to St. Thomas in a single game on March 21st.

“By no means do I think we couldn’t have gone 7 & 0 on our southern swing,” Vodenlich said. “We made some mistakes which once again is part of spring training and we are working now on correcting those mistakes.”

I’ll be blogging Coach Vodenlich’s thoughts on his pitching staff coming out of spring training. That will be coming up tomorrow here on voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com.

A reminder: The Warhawks will host Ripon College on Thursday afternoon (3/31). Due to unplayable field conditions (snow covered) at Ripon, the location of the non-conference twinbill was switched to James Miller Stadium in Whitewater earlier this week. First pitch Thursday is set for 1 p.m.
