Warhawks set to leave for "Spring Training" in sunny Florida

The UW-Whitewater baseball team will depart Whitewater Wednesday for a much anticipated week of “spring training” games in central Florida.

Hawk head coach John Vodenlich had hoped for a week of warm weather to allow his team to work outdoors in James B. Miller Stadium. Snow cover and cold temperatures put that idea on a permanent back burner.

“Murphy’s Law” is in full effect as temperatures in the 50s and 60s will descend on Whitewater beginning the day the team departs for Florida.

UW-Whitewater takes a 2 & 0 record into “spring training.” The defending WIAC champions defeated Washington University 11 to 1 and 16 to 10 in a two game series 10 days ago down in St. Louis.

Despite the two victories there is plenty to work on down in the “Sunshine State.”

“There is a number of things we didn’t do well (vs. Wash U),” Vodenlich tells Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com. We have been focusing on those things since our trip to St. Louis. Our goal is to continue to win this coming week.”

As far as finding a lineup following the loss of several key seniors off last year’s 42 & 7 club.

“We have most of those questions answered,” Vodenlich said. “We feel very good on where we are going to play certain people, what they bring to the team and what there roles are. We have that figured out for the most part.”

The first six in UW-Whitewater’s batting order were the same in the first two games.

The Warhawks will open the Florida portion of its schedule with varsity reserve games vs. St. Lawrence University (3/17) and Southern Maine (3/18).

UW-Whitewater’s scheduled varsity games (at this time) are:
(3/19) vs. St. Olaf (Minn) DH
(3/20) vs. St Thomas (Minn)
(3/21) vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio)
(3/21) vs. St. Thomas (Minn)
(3/25) vs. Concordia-Moorhead (Minn)

The Warhawks also have six “varsity reserve” games scheduled.

* Please note that the schedule is subject to changeUW-Whitewater is scheduled to play Bethel University (Minn) in doubleheader action on Saturday March 26th at James B. Miller Stadium with action beginning at 12-Noon).
