Big bats and strong pitching were the recipe for success Saturday in the Warhawks'11-1 win over Ripon College in UW-Whitewater's 2010 home opener.
Senior lefthander Riley Tincher coninued his excellent early-season pitching by giving up just five hits, while walking one and striking out six going the distance for Jon Vodenlich's team. The senior from Oregon, Wisconsin is now 3 & 0 on the season.
Ripon took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a Dave McFarland RBI single.
The Hawks responded with five in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Levitt ripped a two-run home run to get the Hawks on the board. A third run scored on a passed ball, and first baseman Jeff Donovan capped the inning with a two RBI single to make the score UWW 5, Ripon 1.
Whitewater added one in the 6th and erupted for its second five run inning of the day in the seventh. Levitt's three-run home run, his second HR of the day, highlighted the inning for the Hawks.
Despite opening the "North portion" of the schedule in lower 50 degree temperatures, the Hawk bats stayed hot.
Ryan Levitt paced the Warhawks at the plate by going 3 for including 2 home runs and 5 RBI. Jeff Donovan went 4 for 4 and 3 RBI. Jordan Stein and Daniel Putnam each added to hits for the Hawks.
