Dylan Friend propels UWW past Hamline 7-6 in 10 innings


Over the last couple of days the buzz out of the UW-Whitewater clubhouse has been for the UWW bats get hot and one through nine in the batting order must be able to “step up” in key situations.

Matt Beyer and Dylan Friend stood up BIG in the 10th inning of Thursday’s second round game vs. Hamline University on Pucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

Beyer rifled a two-out triple to center field. Dylan Friend then reached out a slapped a double just inside the right field line to score Beyer with what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Hawks “got the bats going” against the MIAC postseason champions pounding out 16 hits on the way to the win.

UWW got home runs from Jeff Donovan and Rob Coe.

Matt Beyer continued his torrid hitting by going 4 for 5 and scoring two of the Warhawks’ seven runs.

Rob Coe finished 3 for 5 including the home run and 2 RBI.

Donovan finished 2 for 4 including the home run and 2 RBI.

Dan Putnam, Andrew Eichstaedt and Jared Fon also scored a run for the Warhawks.

Justin Lambert went the first 4.1 innings on the mound for UWW giving up three runs on five hits.

Matt Roberts, Eric Fritz and Riley Tincher combined to pitch the next 2.2 innings with Tincher giving up 3 runs allowing Hamline tie the score 6-6 in the 8th inning.

Rob Coe pitched the final two innings to earn his second save in as many days.

UW-Whitewater, now 33 & 11 on the season will play the winner of Friday's 10 a.m. elimination game pitting UW-Stevens Point and Hamline University.

The winner of that game will play the Warhawks at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
