Wahawks and Tommies are no stranger on the diamond

The UW-Whitewater and St. Thomas baseball teams are no strangers on the diamond.

The Warhawks and Tommies split a pair of games in early March this year down in Florida.

GAME ONE: UW-Whitewater 7, St. Thomas 6
The Hawks met UST on March 20th in Leesburg, Florida. UWW won a tight game, 7-6. Jack Larsen got his first career start on the mound for Whitewater. The junior from Menomonee Falls High School was roughed up for four runs pitching getting just two outs in the first inning. Veteran reliever Kyle Lee came in and pitched eight inning of quality relief, giving up just 2 runs to get the victory. Colin Grove came in to get the final out to record his first career save.

Drew Eichstaedt led the way at the plate for UWW by going 2 for 3 including a double. Matt Beyer and Travis Wessels also ripped two-base hits with Beyers knocking in 3 runs in the 7-6 victory.

UST out hit the Warhawks 10-7. Tim Kuzman, Drew Cremisino, and Charles Bruchu each had two hits in the game for the Tommies. Six of the seven runs scored by St. Thomas in the game were by the top six in the batting order.

Mark Dominik went the first three innings on the mound for UST giving up six runs and taking the loss. Much like UWW’s Kyle Lee, pitched the final six innings giving up just one run and two hits but did not get a decision.

GAME TWO: St. Thomas 6, UW-Whitewater 4
UWW and UST met again the following day.

A five-run fourth inning for St. Thomas proved to be the difference maker on Monday in a 6-4 UW-Whitewater loss in Leesburg, Florida.
St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Warhawks answered back in the third to take a 3-1 lead. A Jeff Donovan (Wauwautosa/East) triple with the bases loaded scored Rob Coe, Andrew Eichstaedt, and Daniel Putnam.

UW-W relinquished their lead in the top of the fourth serving up five runs to go down 6-3. The Tommies led off with a homerun, scored two more on a double, and scored two more on a costly error.

UW-W fought back tallying one run in the bottom of the eighth when Putnam singled in Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah), but UW-W was unable to complete the comeback and fell to St. Thomas 6-4.

Donovan recorded three hits in the game to go along with his three RBIs while Wessels also notched three hits. Putnam recorded two hits and one RBI and extends his hitting streak to seven games.

Matthew Roberts pitched four innings for UW-W and got the loss after surrendering six runs, 4 earned. Colin Grove came on to finish the game and only surrendered two hits to the 17 batters he faced while striking out three and walking one.

Since 2004, John Vodenlich’s first year as UW-Whitewater head coach the Warhawks are 6 & 2 vs. the Tommies.
