Hawks drop 15-7 game to UW-Stevens Point in Hawks WIAC Tournament Opener
The UW-Whitewater baseball team jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over UW-Stevens Point in game two of the 2010 WIAC Baseball Championship Friday at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater. At first glance, it looked like the tournament's No. 1 season was on the way to its 35th victory of the season. The Pointers had other thoughts.
Trailing 5-1 entering the fifth inning, Stevens Point's bats came alive scoring four in the third inning, four more in the 6th, and sealed the deal with 6 more in the top of the ninth. The Hawks would score two in the bottom of the ninth inning - too little too late. Final score: UWSO 15, UWW 7.
The wind was blowing out to right field in excess of 25 miles per hour Saturday afternoon which led to five home runs and seven doubles.
Jeremey Richter led the hit parade for the Pointers with a 3 for 3 day including a home run and 4 RBI. Josh Krueger and Steve Considine also blasted home runs for the No, 2 seed Pointers.
Mike Kenseth led the Hawks with a 3 for 4 day including a home run and 3 RBI (see ajacent photo courtesy of Jeff Seisser - Daily Jefferson County Union) Jordan Stine knocked it two runs including his third home run of the season.
Joel Delorit scattered 10 hits in seven innings to pick up his 7th win of the season against 2 losses.
Riley Tincher suffered his first loss of the season following 11 consecutive wins. The big lefthander gave up 9 runs on 11 hits in 5-and-a-third innings pitcher. Kyle Lee pitched the final three-a-two-thirds innings giving up 6 runs on eight hits.
With the win, Stevens Point advances to tomorrow's championhip round. Whitewater will face UW-Platteville, a 17-6 loser to Stevens Point in the tournament opemer, in a loser's bracket game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
