Warhawks advance, will play UW-Stevens Point Friday morning

It will be UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point on Thursday morning in the battle of the two remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division III Midwest Regional action. Stevens Point advances by beating defending National Champion St. Thomas, 2-1, in a nail biter on Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

It was the Tommies who wasted little time putting a run on the board, as rightfielder Mat Olson connected on a Scott Williams fastball and sent it over the leftfield fence for his third home run of the season, giving St. Thomas an early 1-0 lead in the first.

In the fourth, the Pointers took the lead with one swing of the bat, as Jeremy Richter belted a two out, two-run home that plated Sam Spurney ahead of him, pushing UW-Stevens Point in front 2-1.

From there, it was all Williams, as he struck out four and walked just one as the Pointers advance to round three in the winners bracket.

The Tommies out-hit the Pointers 8-4 on the afternoon but it was Richter’s one swing that provided all the offense UW-Stevens Point would need.

St. Thomas’ Kris Edwards, who opened his career as a Warhawk, suffered the loss, allowing the four Pointer hits, going eight innings, striking out two and walking two.

The Pointers win sets up a rematch with Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Whitewater in a battle of undefeated teams in the regional on Friday morning at 10 a.m. The winner will automatically advance to Saturday’s championship round.

The Warhawks advanced earlier Thursday following its 6-2 victory over the College of St. Scholastica (Minn) eliminating the Saints from the double elimination tournament.

In Thursday’s other game, Carthage College advanced in an elimation game with a 10-5 victory over Aurora University (Ill).
