Hawks WIAC title just the next step of the journey

For the week prior to the 2010 WIAC Conference Baseball Tournament their was the question of how much did the UW-Whitewater baseball team want the postseason title knowing that their 35 & 4 record was good enough to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III national championship field.

“Behind everything is motivation,” Warhawk head coach John Vodenlich told reporters following yesterday’s securing of an outright, 2010 WIAC title. “Our eye has always been on the regional and that and that could have been the motivation. Obviously we found the motivation to be here today to compete and we did. We did a nice job and I’m proud of them.”

Whitewater’s 5-3 and 6-2 victories over the archrival Pointers had an NCAA tournament feel to them.

The victories also showed fans the competitive nature that boils inside the players.

“I think in many respects you may have seen two of the better teams in the nation play today,” Vodenlich said. “There is a committee that decides what at-large teams will make it into the (NCAA) field.”

Stevens Point will definitely receive strong consideration to be included in this year’s tournament field.

From the first pitch this year, winning a regional championship and getting to the national championship game has been our goal, Vodenlich said.

For the Warhawks, it is on to the next step to the season – the NCAA Division III playoffs.
