Remember the old Twilight Zone television show (still can be seen on ION TV.
Game-two of Sunday’s doubleheader drifted into the twilight zone in the seventh inning.
Whitewater was leading 10-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning and nearing the mandated 10-run rule in WIAC baseball games. With one out, Rob Coe blasted a double down the left field line to score David Cladis and Danny Putnam to give the Warhawks an apparent run-rule victory.
The Hawks came out on to the field thinking the game was over. Superior thought the game was over. And longtime Prucha Field public address announcer Tom Lange had already vacated his press box seat and was heading downstairs.
No so fast my baseball knowledgeable readers of this blog.
(In the adjacent photo - Danny Putnam is greeted by teammates after scoring what should have been the game-winning run due to the WIAC's 10-run rule. The umpires said 'play on' - Tom Pattison photo)T
The umpires said the game WAS NOT over. UW-Whitewater head coach John Vodenlich explained following the game.
“The question was asked to the umpires what exactly is the rule because it is their (umpires) job to make the call,” Coach Vodenlich explained following the game. “They said they didn’t know the rule and I said OK lets keep playing.”
Whitewater ended up scoring six runs in the inning on the way to a 15-2 full game victory.
Hopefully there will not be another sequel to Sunday’s strange situation.
