The UW-Stevens Point baseball team entered the season much like archrival UW-Whitewater did.
Both teams are coming back from outstanding seasons which saw the two predominant teams in the WIAC over the past several years’ battle ten times with UWW winning six of the 10 games.
Both teams are highly ranked in the latest d3baseball.com Top 25 national poll.
The Warhawks (11-2) enter the weekend No. 7 in the poll. The Pointers are ranked No. 10.
"When you have a high ranking and predicted expectations of winning conference and other championships, it's tough not to be aware of that," UWSP head coach Pat Bloom tells WAOW TV-19 in Wausau. "You're going to get everybody's best shot and we've got to be ready to manage that and compete at that level inning by inning."
Point’s aspirations for the season are absolutely no different than those of the Warhawks.
"Every year your goal is to ultimately win the conference and go on and have a chance to play in the world series," UWSP junior third baseman Justin Jirschele said. "No matter who picks us where or what, we always have that same goal every year at the start."
The WIAC rivals will play four games this weekend in Stevens Point. 12-noon doubleheaders are set for both Saturday and Sunday.
Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com will be blogging all weekend long.
