Voice Box - Sunday, April 10th

Voice here…. I have a couple hours before I have to head over to the ball park for some UWW-UWW baseball. I’ve got time to blog some of my thoughts on the weekend.

I just got back from having my traditional fruit loops breakfast here at the Fairfield Inn. In my eyes it really is “the breakfast of champions.” Maybe more accurately said, “it is the breakfast of champions for bloggers who watch champions play.”

The Warhawks had a great day yesterday sweeping Stevens Point, 5-3 and 6-2 on the first day of the weekend four-game series here in Point.

The Hawks ability to absorb committing three errors and give up three runs in the first inning of game one was huge. With 2010 WIAC Pitcher of the Year Riley Tincher on the mound and a number of other “tested veterans,” the Hawks were able to stay poised and do what they had to do to win the game. It is one of those games that could really “stand out” at the end of the season.

How about Jeff Donovan’s impact on the Hawks’ 6-2 win in the nightcap. Donovan threw eight innings and gave up two runs on seven hits, while keeping the Pointers bats quiet over the first three innings. Donovan proved to be just as effective at the plate, blasting a three-run home run that sparked a five-run seventh inning.
Jeff’s performance sure caught the eye of Point head coach Pat Bloom. "Jeff has been a great pitcher in the league over the past four years," Bloom tells the Stevens Point Journal. "He kept us off balance at the plate all game, and he came up big with the bat when they needed him to."

With the number of veterans on the 2011 Warhawks I sometimes get caught gravitating towards the veterans when I am blogging about the team. Yesterday I realized the impact that the “non-veterans” make.

I’m going to do a full-story early in the week, but seeing players like Dylan Friend (centerfield), David Cladis (2nd base), and a number of others make big contributions game in and game out I realize how quality depth has been a major reason why UWW has won 7 of the last WIAC titles.

Both teams went with their No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers yesterday. It will be interesting to watch the pitching match-ups today for the back-half of the weekend series.
Hopefully we will be able to get the games in this afternoon. There is a threat of storms today here in central Wisconsin. The Weather Channel forecast is calling for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe, especially toward evening. Unseasonably warm with a high of 78 degrees. Brisk southerly winds (blowing in from right field) 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 35 mph)

Keep an eye on the weather and I’ll be blogging after game-one this afternoon.

GO HAWKS
