Warhawks balancing impressive hitting with solid pitching

All eyes will be on this weekend’s four-game series between UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater at University Field in Stevens Point.

The Warhawks enter the weekend with an 11 & 2 record (4-0 in WIAC) and ranked No. 7 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 national poll.

UW-Stevens Point is ranked 10th with a season mark of 9 & 4 and opens its conference season this weekend against archrival Whitewater.

The Warhawks enter this weekend’s games with a hefty .361 team batting average however the 3.19 team ERA may be the more impressive statistic.

The pitching staff has been much more than Riley Tincher (3-1) and Jeff Donovan (4-0).

In last weekend’s four-game sweep of UW-Superior, UWW pitching gave up just five runs to the Yellowjackets.

Justin Lambert (sophomore) and Colin Grove (freshman) started two of the four games last weekend for the Warhawks. Lambert pitched 7-plus innings for the second time this season. The bullpen also continued its early season dominance.

“We’ve got a lot of guys (pitchers) to pick from,” Jeff Donovan tells Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com. “When they’ve gotten the call they have been excited to get out there and prove they can pitch important innings for us.”

Much like Whitewater, the Pointers return a large nucleus from last year’s team that advanced to the Division III World Series.

Point will take a .356 batting average and 4.32 team ERA into its four-game weekend series against UW-Whitewater with 12-noon doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.
