With thunderstorms lurking to the southwest, UW-Whitewater got its bats going early in game-two of Sunday's doubleheader in Stevens Point.
Jeff Donovan and designated hitter Sam Keller combined for back-to-back, run-scoring singles in the top of the first to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead..
Point answered with three of their own in the bottom of the first. first inning. The Pointers combined for four hits and a Warhawk error to manufacture three runs and a 3-2 lead.
The Warhawks immediately came back in the top of the second innings. Andrew Eichstaedt singled in the tying run (David Cladis) and Rob Coe followed Eichstaedt’s RBI single with a sacrifice fly to score Putnam and give UWW a 4-3 lead.
Point evened the score at 4-4 in the UWSP half of the second inning.
Point took the lead with one run the third and the score stayed 5-4 until the bottom of the fifth.
Bryan Clark unloaded his first home run of the season with two outs and two men on via walks to give the Pointers an 8-4 advantage heading into the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning Whitewater loaded the bases on singles by Donovan and DH Ryan Leavitt, followed by Matt Beyer being hit by a pitch. With one out, pinch-hitter Jared Fon singled through the right side to cut the deficit in half, 8-6.
Three more in the UWSP eighth extended the Pointer lead to 11-6.
The Hawks cut the lead to 11-7 in the ninth on pinch-hitter Logan Peot’s sacrifice fly to score Dylan Friend.
Putnam lead the Warhawks’ 12-hit attack with a 4 for 5 game-two. Jeff Donovan finished 2 for 4, Eichstaedt, Keller, Leavitt, Beyer, Fon and Peot all delivered a base hit.
UWW starter, Kyle Lee took the loss, his first of the season after two wins.
Tyler Flood picked up his first career victory for the Pointers.
Point will host UW-Oshkosh for two games on Wednesday.
Whitewater returns home to host UW-Platteville on Wednesday (1 p.m.) on Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
