The UW-Whitewater baseball team survived a shaky first inning on the way to a come-from-behind 5-3 win in game-one of Saturday’s doubleheader vs. UW-Stevens Point at nippy University Field in Stevens Point
The Pointers took advantage of three first inning errors by the Warhawks and Dan Douglas, Eric Fritz, and Cody Koback each scored for an early 3-0 advantage.
UW-Whitewater was able to rally back in the fifth with four runs, highlighted by a two RBI single by Rob Coe.
The Warhawks added one more insurance run in the eighth as Daniel Putnam drove in Dylan Friend for a 5-3 lead.
Tincher went the distance, scattering seven hits and retired six of the last seven Pointers to seal the Warhawk win. Tincher did not allow an earned run while upping his season record to 4 & 1.
Being able to settle down after a tough first inning was the key.
"I was frustrated to say the least," Tincher tells Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com "I kept playing the inning in my head over and over but finally told myself that I have to enjoy this because its my senior year. Fortunately I settled down and got back to pitching one pitch at a time."
"That was a maturity thing," Hawk head coach John Vodenlich said after the game. "A lkot of younger pitchers might have self-destructed because of the miscues in the first (inning) but Riley kept his composure and came up with a number of big pitches on the way to the win."
Dan Putnam lead the Warhawk’s twelve hit attack by going 4 for 5 with an RBI. Jeff Donovan, Dylan Friend and David Cladis each finished the game going 2 for 4. Donovan picked up an RBI while Friend and Cladis each scored a run. Rob Coe had a pair of RBI and Ryan Leavitt also added an RBI.
Pointer starting pitcher Scott Williams (3-2) suffered the loss going all nine innings, allowing five runs while striking out six.
The Hawks are now 5 & 0 in the WIAC and 12 & 2 overall. The Pointers fall to 9 & 5 overall and 0 & 1 in the conference.
