UWW's Dan Putnam & Stout's Matt Guida enter weekend leading nation with .520 batting averages

The two top hitters in NCAA Division III baseball will be on the same field this weekend.

UW-Whitewater’s Danny Putnam and UW-Stout’s Matt Guida enter this weekend’s four-game series in Menomonie hitting at a .520 clip and are tied for the top batting average in this week’s NCAA Division III Statistics.

Putnam went 4 for 9 in the Hawks’ doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Wednesday at James B. Miller Stadium. The senior rightfielder ignited the UWW offense by doubling and scoring in his first at bat in both games. The former Ashland High School athlete also stole two bases. Putnam also leads the WIAC in hits (43), runs scored (30), total bases (43) and stolen bases (14). Putnam enters the weekend with a .573 on base percentage.

UW-Stout catcher Matt Guida has been the key cog in the Blue Devils attack all season. In Stouts’ four game series with UW-Platteville earlier this week, Guida batted .688, going 11-for-16 with 10 RBI and three runs scored. Guida cracked out six doubles and a home run over the weekend for a slugging percentage of 1.250. For his effort, Guida was named the WIAC Position Player of the Week.

Whitewater will be in Menomonie for four games this weekend (weather permitting). Doubleheaders both Saturay and Sunday are set to get underway at UW-Stout's on-campus Nelson Field.
