Hawks open eight-game homestand on Wednesday vs Oshkosh
The UW-Whitewater baseball team opens its eight-game home stand in first place in the WIAC. The Warhawks (23-2, 11-1) open the week by hosting UW-Oshkosh (12-14, 5-7) in doubleheader action Wednesday at James B. Miller Stadium. This weekend, second place Stevens Point will be in town for doubleheader action on Saturday and Sunday. Oshkosh is back for another twin bill next Wednesday.
“When it is all said and done we (Warhawks) have to play Oshkosh and Stevens Point,” UWW head coach John Vodenlich tells Voices Eye on Baseball. “That’s what its going to come down to. It is what winning a title has come down to each year I’ve been here.”
Whitewater, Oshkosh and Stevens Point have dominated WIAC baseball for a long time. Since 1992, it has been Whitewater, Oshkosh or Stevens Point that has won the conference title outright, or shared the title. The only other school to get a piece of a conference title during this time span was UW-La Crosse in 2000.
While the eight-game home stand will have a lot to say on Whitewater’s bid for a ninth WIAC title in the past 11 years, For Coach Vodenlich, there is plenty to still be accomplished.
“Nothings getting any easier, we must continue pressing it, every game is important” Vodenlich said. Superior (the team UWW winds up the regular season with) is playing very good baseball right now. I hate to give you clichés but we have to focus on Wednesday’s doubleheader with Oshkosh and that’s it.
Other games in the WIAC on Wednesday include; Superior at Stout, Platteville at La Crosse, and Stevens Point stepping out of the conference to host Edgewood.
