Hawks return home with two game lead in the WIAC
The UW-Whitewater baseball team won four straight over the weekend in La Crosse. The Warhawks opened the weekend with 13-10 and 5-4 (10 innings) wins on Saturday.
On Sunday, Whitewater won game one 8-6 and game two 8-4. Despite UW-Whitewater being in first place in the WIAC and La Crosse in last place, all four games were highly competitive as the Warhawks had to come from behind to win three of the four games.
“I thought we really played well at times,” UWW head coach John Vodenlich tells Tom Pattison of Voiceseyeonbaseball.blogspot.com. “This team has a spirit – they have a little come from behind spirit. They have quite a bit of confidence going into the next couple weeks of conference play. No matter how you cut it, that was four road wins over the weekend.”
Coming up with timely hits is crucial in winning games – particularly on the road. In both games Sunday, Whitewater fell behind late in both games but were immediately able to come-from-behind in the next inning for the win.
Whitewater is now 23 & 2 on the season and 9 & 1 in the WIAC. The Hawks have opened up a two-game lead over UW-Stevens Point for the conference lead. Stevens Point split with UW-Superior on Sunday.
Now it is back home for Whitewater for a pair of doubleheaders against UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point.
“We are glad to be going home and we are really looking forward to the next couple of series." Vodenlich said.
