• Congratulations to UW-Stevens Point's Pat Bloom who picked up win No. 200 of his UWSP coaching career with a 13-3 nonconference victory over Ripon College at Francis Field on Saturday.
• UW-Oshkosh freshman outfielder Doug Beattie made a big splash at the plate in the Titans’ doubleheader sweep over Lawrence on Thursday, Beattie belted home runs in each game. He finished 6-of-8 with eight RBIs, seven runs and two home runs in the two games
• I have noticed that some WIAC nonconference games this spring have not ended even though the 10-run rule appeared to have been met. Example:
UWO & Lawrence elected to play out Game 1 (of Thursday’s doubleheader) despite the Titan’s 10-run advantage at the end of the top of the seventh; Game 2 ended in seven innings due to darkness. “I "I thought it was an NCAA rule, but I guess it’s just a conference rule,” Lechnir said in the Oshkosh Northwestern game article. “The NCAA rule says it’s by mutual agreement or a conference rule. We’re always willing to play a full game, and they were, too.”
• UW-Superior started the season strong going 6 & 3 in the Metrodome and Florida portion of the schedule. While heading back to Wisconsin the Yellowjackets lost 3 of 4 games in Chicago (split a doubleheader vs. North Park, lost both games of doubleheader vs. North Central).
• UWSP has off until travelling to Oshkosh next weekend for the start of 2010 conference play. The Yellowjackets and Titans will play doubleheaders on Saturday (4/10) and Sunday (4/11).
• UW-La Crosse has played the fewest games of any WIAC team so far this spring. The Eagles are currently 4 & 5 and will have its final nonconference tune-up Monday by taking on Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) in the UW-L home opener. UW-L opens the WIAC portion of the schedule on Wednesday at UW-Stout.
• WIAC statistics check (as of 4/2/10): Whitewater (.412) and Platteville (.370) tops the WIAC in team batting average Whitewater leads the conference with 19 home runs. The Warhawks also lead the WIAC in stolen bases (41 of 51), Platteville is second (19 of 21) Stevens Point (3.81) and Oshkosh (4.17) top the WIAC in pitching.
