Hawks win game-two in come-from-behind fashion

If the UW-Whitewater baseball team were to win the 2010 WIAC regular season championship by one game one will need only to look back at Friday’s come-from-behind win over UW-Platteville to complete a twin bill sweep.

UWW scored three runs in the top of the ninth, erasing a 6-4 Pioneer lead. The Warhawks had four hits, including an RBI single by Daniel Putnam, and runs scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Hawk head coach John Vodenlich brought closer Ben Versnick on in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, the Pioneers put runners at first and third. If you are a Platteville fan, you have exactly the guy you want coming to the plate. Aaron Hopson, NCAA Division III’s leading hitter (entering the week) steps in the box having the chance for a third walk-off winning hit of the season. Versnick gets Hopson on a called third strike (see adjacent photo) and the Warhawks exit Platteville with a doubleheader sweep and 14-1 record on the season including 2-0 in the WIAC.

Aaron Leitner started game-two for Whitewater. Kyle Lee entered the game in the fifth inning and earned the win. Versnick picks up his second save of he season. Combined, the Warhawk pitchers struckout eight batters in the game.

One doubleheader down, two more coming up this weekend. The Warhawks host UW-Stout both Saturday and Sunday. Doubleheaders both days will begin at 12-Noon at the newly renovated Purcha Field at Jim Miller Stadium.
