UW-Stout gameday preview
This weekend, the UW-Whitewater baseball team will face another WIAC team that is extremely potent at scoring runs. UW-Stout (6-7, 1-1) enters James B. Miller Stadium coming off a wild, WIAC season-opening doubleheader split with UW-La Crosse on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils won the first game, 13-12, but lost the second game, 20-9, in eight innings on the 10-run rule.
In the opener, Stout pounded out 16 hits and ran up a 12-4 lead only to see La Crosse (7-6, 1-1) pound their way back into the game with four runs in the seventh inning and four in the ninth.
Brandon O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and four runs scored to lead Stout's 16-hit attack. Seven Blue Devils had two hits or more in the attack and Jake Duske (So, Montrose, Minn) was 2-for-3 with five RBI.
The second game featured nine home runs between the two teams, with La Crosse hitting five and Stout four.
The teams matched runs for much of the first half of the game. Each team scored a single run in the first inning, followed by five runs in each half of the third inning and three runs in each half of the fourth inning.
But La Crosse took over late, scoring 11 runs over the last three innings of the shortened contest, getting one in the sixth, four in the seventh and six in the eighth.
O'Connell had two home runs with four RBI in the game, with Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) and Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown) each getting a round-tripper. For the Eagles, Jay Fanta and Brooks Braga each had two home runs. The Eagles outhit Stout, 25-10.
Last weekend in the Bluedevils 29-1 home opening win over Finlandia, Stout set a school record with 29 runs and 26 hits, breaking a 1981 mark of 27 runs against Pearl River and 24 hits against UW-Superior in 1996 and UW-Stevens Point in 2004.
While Stout has done well at the plate, the Bluedevils have struggled on the mound.
Stout will bring a team ERA of 8.67 into today's doubleheader.
