Warhawks 14 game win streak comes to an end

UW-Platteville beat third-ranked UW-Whitewater 8-4 Wednesday, ending the Warhawks' 14-game winning streak and earning a split of the doubleheader. The Warhawks won the opener 12-2 in seven innings at Kendall Murray Field.

UW-Whitewater's Jason Hooper,coming off Sunday's no-hitter was roughed up early. UWP's Aaron Hopson hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and Tyler Jacobson slugged a two-run double, giving the Pioneers a quick 4-0 lead. Hooper lasted just an inning-and-a-third on the mound. Kyle Lee and Ben Versnick each pitched two-and-two-thirds innings giving up two runs each. Aaron Leitner was on the mound for the final inning-and-a-third giving up 0 runs while striking out two.

The visiting Warhawks scored two in the third, but the Pioneers matched that with two in the bottom, as Levi Ney and Wade Axelson drove home runs. Jason Jacobson and Axelson hit run-scoring knocks in the seventh for an 8-2 lead.

UWW pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth, but Justin Cox retired Daniel Putnam, the WIAC's leading hitter, on a bases-loaded groundout to end the game.

The Warhawks had just eight hits in the game.

The Warhawks rolled 12-2 in game-one Wednesday. Riley Tincher fired a four-hitter to run his record ti 7 & 0.

With the split of today's doubleheader, Whitewater is 19-2 overall, 7-1 in the WIAC.
Platteville is now 12-9 overall and 2-6 in the WIAC
