Warhawks-Pointers split doubleheader


The top two teams in the WIAC opened the weekend with a split on Saturday. The Warhawks held on for a 7-5 victory in the opener. The Pointers took the nightcap 12-1.

Jeff Donovan ripped a first inning home run to give Whitewater an early 1-0 lead in Saturday's first game. The Warhawks extended the lead to 6-1 after seven innings.

The Pointers bounced back in the eighth, scoring four runs to cut the lead to 6-5.

The Hawks scored an insurance run in the eighth inning. Ben Versnick recorded the final five outs to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Warhawk starting pitcher, Riley Tincher, remained undefeated, upping his mark to 9-0 with seven and a third innings of work. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs, walking none and striking out six.

Jordan Stine and Nick Rechlitz had two hits apiece for UW-W. Point was paced by Eric Fritz, Justin Jirschele and Sam Spurney, each with a pair of hits. Tyler Lorenz, 4-3, took the loss.

Game two was a totally different story. Stevens Point scored in six of the eight innings to cruise to 12-1 eight inning/run differential victory.

Senior right-hander Jason Hooper, 3-2, took the loss for UW-W. The Warhawks used four pitchers in the game. Second baseman Ben Kuhlmann went 3x4 to lead Warhawk hitters, his twelfth multiple hit game of the season for UW-W.

Jordan Stine had two hits in each game, givng him a team high thirteen multiple hit games for the season, tied with Jeff Donovan.

Joel Delorit, a junior lefty, upped his record to 4-3 with a complete game. Jirschele went 4x5 for the Point.

UW-Whitewater is 26-3 overall and 14-2 in the WIAC. Stevens Point is 21-8. and 10-4 in league play. The teams will play again Sunday weather permitting.
