Each morning Mike Greenberg opens the popular ESPN Mike & Mike show saying, “We’re back and better than ever.” Another Mike, a little closer to home, is saying the same thing so far this season.
Mike Kenseth is back after missing much of the second half of 2009 due to injury.
The senior shortstop has been looked at more of a defensive player than for his offense.
In Thursday’s doubleheader sweep of Marian University, the 5-10, 170 lb senior shortstop, batting in his usual No. 9 spot in the lineup had an outstanding day at the plate. Kenseth “set the table” for the top of the order by going 7 of 8 at the plate including 2 doubles, driving in 3 runs, scoring 5 times.
“Kenny had a great day,” Hawk coach John Vodenlich tells Voices Eye on Baseball. “The thing with him is I’ll always be happy if he plays a clean game defensively. He not only did that but was outstanding at the plate. It was great to see.”
While it is still early in the season, Kenseth will enter WIAC play next week hitting .444 with 20 hits in 45 at bats to go along with 9 walks. “Kenny” has also scored 20 runs from the No. 9 spot in the batting order.
When Mike is not at shortstop this season, Travis Wessels is. The Tomah native backed up Kenseth last year as a freshman. Wessels was the Warhawk’s everyday catcher in 2009 when Mike went down with his injury.
There is an ironic back-story to the name Mike Kenseth which is a very popular surname here in southern Wisconsin. When you google Mike Kenseth, UW-Whitewater baseball google asks if you mean: Matt Kenseth, UW-Whitewater baseball?
