For UW-Whitewater baseball fans, it is always a little more exciting when you have a local kid doing well for the Warhawks. That local kid this year is Jason Hooper. Following a stellar high school career at Lake Mills High School, the big right-handed pitcher accepted a scholarship offer to play baseball at Jacksonville State University (Florida).
Hooper transferred to UW-Whitewater for his sophomore season.
Now as a senior, the big right-hander will be looked-on not only his skill, but his leadership on the mound.
His last appearance came earlier this week in game-two of the Hawks’ doubleheader vs. Marian University. The big-guy was dominant, going 2-and-two-thirds innings and striking out 5 of the 9 batters he faced.
“Coach Callahan (UWW pitching coach) made some mechanical adjustments in Jason’s last couple of bullpen sessions,” Coach John Vodenlich tells Voices Eye on Baseball Blog. “You always question whether the adjustments will transfer over to gameday but today (Thursday) he looked extremely sharp and had perhaps his best outing of the season.”
"Nothing beats coming in late in the game and just shutting them down," Hooper said following Thursday's solid performance.
So far this season, Hooper has appeared in five games, starting three. He's recorded 18 strike outs in 18 innings pitched.
The 6-foot-5, 250 lb pitcher has been used in a variety a situations during his UW-W career. Hooper has made 25 appearances on the mound in his 2+ seasons with the Warhawks. Seven of those appearances have been as the Hawks’ starting pitcher. Hoop’s career record in currently 9 wins, 4 losses and 2 saves. Hooper has struck out 104 batters in his 113.1 innings of work.
